Anne Hathaway left a photoshoot in full hair and makeup on Tuesday as a show of support for unionized Condé Nast employees.

The 41-year-old actress, known for her role in “The Devil Wears Prada,” had arrived at the Vanity Fair cover shoot in New York on Tuesday morning. While undergoing hair and makeup, she received a call from SAG, prompting her exit in solidarity with the one-day walkout organized by SAG-AFTRA union members supporting Condé Nast. Hathaway had been unaware of the work stoppage initially.

According to a source cited by Variety, Hathaway left before the photoshoot had even begun, stating, “Once Anne was made aware of what was going on, she just got up from hair and makeup and left.”

However, an alternative account from a source mentioned by Page Six contradicted this, asserting that the Vanity Fair shoot adhered to union guidelines, and Hathaway’s team had received approval beforehand.

The source downplayed Hathaway’s departure, describing it as “not a dramatic exit,” but acknowledged it caused some confusion.

In November 2023, Condé Nast CEO Roger Lynch announced layoffs of over 300 employees and other cost-cutting measures for enhanced efficiency.

As part of the one-day walkout, employees from Vogue, GQ, and Vanity Fair joined the protest, with the number of participants reaching around 400.

The Page Six source emphasized the careful consideration taken to ensure the photoshoot complied with union rules, stating that “great care was taken” and that “everything was above board.”

Despite the conflicting accounts, striking workers hailed Hathaway as a hero after she reversed her decision to participate in the shoot.
