AFL Star Faces Accusations of Cocaine Trafficking



The investigation into Melbourne Demons player Joel Smith has taken a dramatic turn as anti-doping officials now accuse him of being involved in cocaine trafficking.

In October 2023, the AFL revealed that Smith had tested positive for cocaine and a major component of the drug, benzoylconone, during a routine screening, in breach of the Australian Football Anti-Doping Code. A urine sample was collected on August 20, 2023 after the Devils’ victory over Hawthorn.

Reacting swiftly, the Demons immediately imposed a provisional suspension as Sport Integrity Australia (SIA) investigated the matter, with Smith considering a possible two-year ban.

Recent reports in the Herald Sun claimed that SIA officials uncovered text messages allegedly sent by Smith, which referred to cocaine. One of those messages, allegedly sent to teammates last year, allegedly included an offer of a quantity of drugs.

“The attempted supply of any prohibited substance, even in small quantities, may be considered trafficking under national anti-doping regulations,” the report states. However, the report did not reveal details like the number or quantity of teammates.
