At least 33 killed in Afghanistan as heavy rains set off flash floods

Afghanistan as heavy rains

At least 33 people have been killed in Afghanistan after three days of heavy rains and flash floods, according to the government’s Disaster Management Department.

 

“Since Friday, rains have caused flash floods that have caused huge human and financial losses,” department spokesman Janan Sayeeq said on Sunday.

Preliminary information shows that unfortunately 33 people were martyred and 27 injured in the flood.

Most of the deaths were caused by roof collapses, as about 600 houses were damaged or destroyed. In addition, 200 cattle have been killed, about 600 kilometers (370 miles) of road have been destroyed, and about 800 hectares (1,975 acres) of agricultural land has been “flooded away,” the spokesman added.
