At least eight pedestrians were killed and several others injured Sunday when an SUV plowed into people near a homeless shelter in Brownsville, Texas, police said.
Lt. Martin Sandoval of the Brownsville Police Department said the male driver was taken into custody, adding that he was charged with reckless driving and could face additional charges.
Sandoval said the accident happened around 8:30 a.m. local time Sunday at a bus stop near the Ozanam Center in the Texan city along the Mexican border.
The New York Times quoted Cameron County Judge Eddie Trevino Jr. as saying it was unclear whether the driver hit the group on purpose or lost control of the vehicle.
