An award-winning fish and chip shop has been ordered to remove a union flag mural by council officials saying it was ‘inappropriate for the area’.

Chris Kinney, 65, who owns the Golden Chippy in Greenwich, south-east London, has been asked to paint a mural of the humanoid fish on the wall of his restaurant, which has been loved by tourists.

Greenwich Council said it had received a ‘number of complaints’ about the wall, which features the phrase ‘A Great British Mail’, saying it was ‘unauthorised advertising’.

Mr Cansizzi, who has run the Golden Chippy for 20 years and lives two doors down, said he did not believe people were complaining about the wall, which was deemed ‘inappropriate’ according to the Telegraph.

In 2016, the 65-year-old battled with the council over a 17-foot sign above the entrance to his restaurant, previously named London’s top-rated restaurant on TripAdvisor. The restaurateur finally took down the 17-foot mark in 2018.
