This historic win marked the first time in 19 years that the NFL saw a repeat champion. The Chiefs, led by superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes, orchestrated a captivating second-half comeback, adding overtime heroics to their impressive repertoire.

In a nail-biting overtime clash, Jake Moody’s 27-yard field goal initially gave the 49ers a 22-19 lead. However, the Chiefs swiftly responded with a 13-play, 75-yard drive, sealing the victory with a 3-yard touchdown pass from Mahomes to Mecole Hardman.

Kansas City showcased its trademark resilience in a crucial drive late in the fourth quarter, trailing 19-16. In the final moments, Mahomes orchestrated an 11-play, 75-yard march, setting up Harrison Butker’s game-tying 29-yard field goal. The pivotal play came on a third-and-7 with 16 seconds left, as Mahomes connected with Travis Kelce for a 22-yard gain, positioning the Chiefs for the decisive kick.

The triumph marked the Chiefs’ fourth Super Bowl win, with coach Andy Reid securing his third championship, tying with Bill Walsh and Joe Gibbs for the third-most all-time. Only Bill Belichick (six) and Chuck Noll (four) have more.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes, earning his third Super Bowl MVP, delivered a stellar performance, completing 34-of-46 passes for 333 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception, boasting a 99.3 passer rating. Mahomes now joins the exclusive company of Tom Brady (five) and Joe Montana (three) as the only players with three Super Bowl MVP awards.

Mahomes, with a remarkable 15-3 playoff record in his six-year career, ascends into elite company as one of five quarterbacks in league history to win at least three Super Bowls. Notably, Mahomes, at 28, joins Brady and Troy Aikman as the only quarterbacks to achieve this feat before turning 30. Across the last two postseasons, Mahomes has maintained an impeccable 7-0 record, throwing 13 touchdowns and just one interception.

Addressing the underdog status mentioned by CBS announcer Jim Nantz on the postgame podium, Mahomes confidently asserted, “Just know that the Kansas City Chiefs are never underdogs. Just know that.”
