During the event, an awkward exchange between Simpson and West Coast CEO Don Pyke occurred, coupled with a pointed remark directed at a journalist. However, it was an offhand comment before Simpson even took his seat that caught fans’ interest.

As Simpson entered the packed auditorium filled with Eagles players and coaches, he appeared to whisper something to young star Harley Reid while passing Bailey Williams. Although the exact words were unclear, some fans speculated that Simpson said, “you had your say,” while others believed it was “you have to stay.” This moment quickly circulated on social media, with fans analyzing both Reid’s reaction and that of AFLW legend Daisy Pearce, who seemed taken aback.

Reid later expressed his gratitude towards Simpson on social media, posting heartfelt thanks along with photos of them together. “I couldn’t thank this bloke enough for what he’s done in such a short time of my career,” Reid wrote. “One of the greatest to ever do it and has put up with so much.”

Despite Simpson’s tenure ending after 11 seasons, he was offered the opportunity to coach one final game against Brisbane at Optus Stadium on Sunday. This offer led to an awkward moment during the press conference, with Pyke stating, “It’s important we pay respect for what he’s done for our club and recognize the wonderful contribution he’s made. We’ve requested Adam coach the side one final time this weekend.”
