Polls to be held on February 8,General Asim
COAS General Asim Munir assured the Pakistani-American business community that general polls “will be held on February 8” next year.
The assurance was given during a meeting in the United States, just hours before the Supreme Court’s verdict on December 15, confirming the scheduled date for the polls.
The issue was discussed during General Asim Munir’s interaction with overseas Pakistanis at a dinner reception hosted by the Pakistan Embassy in Washington.
A Texas-based businessman, Tanveer Ahmed, quoted the army chief, stating, “As far as I know, general elections will be held on the 8th of February.”
General Munir acknowledged the ongoing PTI petition in the Lahore High Court (LHC) against the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and suggested that any potential delay wouldn’t go beyond the Senate elections scheduled for March 2024.
The Lahore High Court had initially suspended the ECP’s notification regarding returning officers (ROs) on December 13, raising concerns about the timely conduct of elections.
However, the Supreme Court later suspended the high court verdict, instructing the commission to proceed with the election plans.
